Rise From the Depths

Year: 2021
Materials: Digital

A poster based on the movie The Lighthouse made for a graphic design class in university.

My role: Photographer, Editor

Time took to create: 2 weeks

Creation Process

Criteria: Create a poster based on a quote from the movie The Lighthouse using one direct quote and self-made assets.

Pre-production

The first week was spent taking photos to be used as assets for the poster. There was much planning beforehand, I tried to set up some shots, but for the most part, I was just searching for things that might work, experimenting and the like. Each image was set up and taken in my house using my phone.

Production

After collecting my assets, I put them into a photoshop file to decide the composition and which files to use. I went back to the given quote and picked the specific line that I wanted to use and based this poster on. With all that in mind, I overlaid many different takes of the same image and applied different blending effects and adjustments to give the whole poster a dark, somewhat horror movie style. The last step was adding the text. I had difficulty laying out the text somewhere that would be eye-catching and lead the eye without blocking the imagery or looking cluttered. There were a few layouts I tested and experimented with, and finally, I landed on this version. Finally, I added some final blending effects and cleaned up the final composition.

Afterthoughts

Photography is a challenge for me. Creating my photo assets was difficult because I couldn't quite translate what I wanted into little pieces that I could photograph in my environment. But it was a challenge I appreciated and learned a lot about creativity and angles from. Editing it together and cleaning up my assets to be used was also a new experience, but one I am fairly confident in now. I'm quite pleased with how the final result turned out.

What I Learned

  • Preplanning to create assets

  • Asset photography

  • Editing assets for use
